Bread & butter, spaghetti & meatballs, bacon & eggs, corned beef & cabbage, fire pits & chocolate.
If you haven't paired chocolate with fire pits before, then you are in for a treat. Fire pits and chocolate went together long before the ancient Aztecs introduced the cocoa bean to the Conquistadores. Both the Aztecs and the Mayans considered chocolate to be a gift from the gods. Many today would agree.
Shortly after being introduced in Europe, chocolate earned its legacy as an aphrodisiac. In early seventeenth century Vienna, chocolate was condemned as an inflamer of passions. Monks were instructed to avoid it.
Today, people who want to escape high-tech stress for a few hours know that chocolate harmonizes perfectly with the ambiance of a wood burning fire pit. Forget the S'mores. Those are for kid's parties. You're an adult now and able to handle the good stuff. Make a Molten Chocolate Orange cake.
You will need:
2 large oranges, the thick-skinned navel oranges work best. Slice each orange about a half inch from the top to make a lid or cap. Scoop out the insides with a spoon. You can eat the pulp, toss it in with your salad, or save it for later. It won't be used in this recipe. Keep the shell of the orange peel and the cap.

Mix together:
1/4 cup raisins or chopped dried fruit
2 tablespoons shortening or margarine
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon cocoa
1/4 to 1/3 cup water - the drier the raisins, the more water you need; the moister, the less you'll need.
Cook together until well blended, and then cool slightly.

Add:
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
a dash of salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
a dash of salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Stir just until blended. If you wish to make the batter ahead of time, wait to add the baking soda until right before filling the orange rinds and baking. This eggless batter can be kept safely at room temperature for a couple of hours.
Spoon the batter into the hollowed out oranges and put the caps back on. Wrap securely in heavy foil or double wrap with standard foil. Bake in the fire, turning as needed. A moderate bed of coals will cook the cakes in about 15 minutes. Remove with tongs. Your molten chocolate creation should have the consistency of a pudding cake.
