There are times when cake sounds delicious and you try to think of ways to make it tasty without adding frosting that increases the calorie intake.
Thank goodness there is jello to add color and creativity to a plain white or golden cake. Even though jello is well known around the world, it is a particular favorite in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Both moms and dads across the globe know that a kid-pleasing jello recipe is easy to find, allowing them to celebrate a special accomplishment with a special dessert ready in minutes.
Exotic Jello Recipes
Instead of gelatin, you will often find agar agar in eastern countries like China and Japan. Made from a seaweed base, agar agar is recognized around the globe as vegetarian jello, and has the same setting and thickening power as gelatin. One of Japan's favorite traditional sweet treats is yokan, made with azuki beans, sugar, water, and agar agar. It hardens as it is cooled and cut or broken into chunks. Mizu is Japanese for water and so the traditional dish is changed slightly by adding more water to create mizu-yokan, a vegetarian style of jello. If you see a jello recipe calling for anko, that is the sweet red paste made from the azuki beans.
The exotic flavors of the Orient do not stop there. Experiment with hazelnut essence, vanilla essence, or almond essence and gelatin to create a flavorful delicate blend of cool jello. There are times when a gentle soothing dessert like almond jello will be the right touch for the finish to dinner. Particularly if there will be servings of fruit with dinner, fruit jello for dessert can be passed by and one of the essences offered instead.

As you can see, jello is much more than a packet of crystals mixed with water.
